Good Candidate for Patent Attorney in the Arts?

Hi,

I have
- B.A. in Spanish
- M.A. in International Affairs
- 6yrs freelance experience in performing arts, 3yrs mainly assisting in investment management as executive assistant
- 2yrs experience as journalist.

I'm now considering heading to law school next year to later become a patent attorney and working with intellectual property rights in perfoming arts or the music industry. I'm curious whether I have a good enough background for job opportunities as a candidate one I complete J.D.? I have no interest in the sciences and am thinking of law school to be original in providing my critical thinking and assessment ability as a skill in the arts industry. I'd appreciate your feedback!

You don't seem to understand what a patent attorney is. No, you cannot be a patent attorney with that background. One might say that "interest in the sciences" is to some extent a prerequisite.

You could be an attorney focusing on other intellectual property areas, such as those related to the arts -- copyright, performance rights, licensing/contracts, and the like. None of those have any significant linkage to patents, and the people who focus on those areas are not "patent attorneys".

Thank you for your reply. I have no science background nor am I interested in getting into the field.
This is exactly the type of work I'm interested in. Dealing with licensing, copyrights in music and the arts. What type of attorney would deal with such affairs?

Such an attorney might also call themselves an intellectual property lawyer, or might just go into business as an agent for artists.

Thank you MichaelJustice and Robert KS, for your replies. I'm a real novice at the legal aspect of the industry and this has been helpful.

Robert, would this be a good time to go in to the industry as an IP lawyer? My perception is that it's always a good time since the arts industry is all about protection and suing but I'm curious what a practitioner's point of view is.
